Lyffs never evolved to have skulls, so instead they evolved the ability to instantly grow icy shards around their brains instead. This was a much more complicated solution, but nature isn't perfect.

Taming
Once you find a Lyff Egg, you can hatch it with a Lyff Incubator.
To embiggen your Lyff to Powerful level, you need a Lyff Toy Bauble, which can be crafted with the Burnchurn.
To embiggen your Lyff to Epic level, you need a Barbell, which can be crafted with the Foundry.
Tame Lyffs can produce the Lyff Crystalshard, used to produce the Icy Pickaxe.
Attack Pattern
A Lyff's attack pattern is very simple. When detected or provoked, a Lyff will screech at you and shoot 4 crystal shards at your current location. It performs no other attacks.
